The gatekeeping and rage-baiting in Star Wars is outrageous!
The issues surrounding the Star Wars franchise have escalated significantly, with an increase in grifting, gatekeeping, and rage-baiting. Some individuals actively incite anger among fans, spread false information, and even revoke someone's status as a fan if they enjoy Disney Star Wars or a particular show they dislike. They frequently claim that various shows and movies, from Disney Star Wars to others outside the franchise, will flop and be poorly received and that they are only right that it is bad and nothing else can prove it’s not. Despite this negativity, many people find this kind of content entertaining.
This behavior is often driven by a group known as the "fandom menace," which consists of right-wing trolls, grifters, and rage-baiters. They engage in tactics like review-bombing and social media attacks against creators and fans who hold differing opinions. Their targets often include women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals, as they use platforms like Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, and YouTube to spread their hateful messages.
Many of these creators benefit from the clicks and views generated by promoting drama and sharing misleading information. For example, some individuals often misrepresent details about Kathleen Kennedy and her "Force for Female" T-shirt, which was part of a Nike marketing campaign launched in 2017 and has no connection to Star Wars. Additionally, rumors persist that Kathleen Kennedy is going to be fired, leading many of these creators and their followers to wish for her dismissal. However, this has not happened and likely never will, no matter how much they hope for it. Despite this, people continue to distort this information for their personal gain.
Another notable spreading of false information is Amandla Stenberg's interview on The Daily Show with Noah Trevor. People claim she is talking about The Acolyte but was actually talking about her film The Hate You Give, which is a movie about police brutality. This is why you see people leaving comments on her Instagram saying stuff like, “I guess white people weren’t crying.” and “Who’s crying now?” because people took what she said and used it against her.
Channels like Geeks and Gamers, Nerdrotic, The Critical Drinker, and other Star Wars YouTubers have gained substantial followings by engaging in this type of behavior.
