Amandla Stenberg still receives attacks and harsh comments
When The Acolyte aired, Amandla Stenberg received vile attacks from the toxic side of the Star Wars fandom and others, However, her new role in Children of Blood and Bone has also led to the same conclusion. She actually spoke about it here is what she had to say.
“I just want to take this moment to fully address, in video format, this perception that exists of me—that I steal roles from dark-skinned women,” she began. “This year was mostly defined for me, honestly, by contending with what it felt like to receive racist death threats just for existing in the ‘Star Wars’ universe, and that was a really difficult thing for me to move through. But honestly, it feels so much more painful for me to feel like I’m at odds with my own community.”
Then she continued, “I want everyone to know that this is important to me, and I think about it with every choice that I make. I would never navigate my career blindly, not thinking about my skin tone or the space I occupy. I would never go after a role I didn’t feel was right for me…I want to see all skin tones represented in media. I know that colorism is an insidious system that relentlessly impacts every facet of entertainment.”
What did people say on her Instagram? One user posted a comment on her Instagram: “Hey, remember when The Acolyte got canceled? 😂 By the way, you suck at acting.”
Another commenter wrote, “This is why The Acolyte flopped.” Someone else stated, “You’re a colorist, and I can’t wait for Black Hollywood to retire you.”
Another added, “At this point, you’re the problem.” One comment called for a widespread backlash: “Everybody, let’s start hating this woman and begin mass unfollowing Amandla Stenberg.”
Lastly, another user remarked, “Why is it always you at the scene of the crime? Taking roles meant for darker-skinned actors... it’s literally insufferable. Learn from Zendaya.” It's very disheartening to see this happen again, and the thing is, it’s not even her fault. These people are just the worst people ever to encounter, and it only proves the point that she was meant for this role and to stand up to hate like this.
Amandla Stenberg inspired the writer of "Children of Blood and Bone" due to her role as Rue in "The Hunger Games" and the impact that experience had on her.
Stenberg shared, “I had the opportunity to meet Tomi, the novelist, for the first time. She said, ‘Amandla, I want you to know that when you were a little girl and cast as Rue in 'The Hunger Games,' people claimed that Rue’s death wouldn’t be as sad because you’re a Black girl. That inspired me to write this series so that Black girls like you, and Black girls of all shades, could have stories written about them.’ We both started crying, and I thought to myself, ‘God wants me here.’”
It’s disheartening to see how some people can be so unkind, especially in relation to an amazing and heartfelt story like this one, which was inspired by Stenberg’s role in The Hunger Games franchise and the desire to tell stories about Black girls. I will leave a link to the Instagram post where the comments are from, where you can find more vile and nasty comments.
